I am writing to sing the praises of members of our community who take time to improve the lives of others. The Learning Connection, a program of SERRC (Southeast Alaska Regional Resource Center) at Gruening Park has coordinated three “Family Nights” this fall. These events are part of our outreach to serve the neighborhood of Lemon Creek and the residents of Gruening Park.
Juneau Public Libraries’ Felicite Toney has provided a “Mobile Library” at three Family Nights at Gruening Park starting in the spring of 2017. She and the staff of the libraries go above and beyond to encourage readers and users of our fantastic library system.
Juneau Public Health has provided staff for two family events, and free flu shots to help keep our community healthy. Nurses Elaine Hickey, Autumn Muse and Trisa Marvin spent an evening or two with us to share information and help reduce the risk of flu spreading in our community.
The Common Ground Church, led by Gary and Julie Leder, continue on their mission to build community by donating delicious meals and their time to make these family events happen. Their ministry and year-round support of food programs at Gruening Park is inspiring.
Our holiday event was also graced by a visit from Santa! More than fifty children had a few minutes with Santa and received small gifts to kick off the holiday spirit. Thank you to Michael and Tamara Rowcroft for their ongoing support and generosity.
Our collective goal is to contribute to a positive and resilient community. This is only possible through the time, energy and generosity of the diverse members of the community. Thank you all for your time and support.
