Locals receive Margaret Frans Brady, Simon and Anna Kirk Scholarship Awards

The Juneau Community Foundation recently announced awards from the Margaret Frans Brady and the Simon and Anna Kirk Memorial Scholarship Funds, with 10 students from Juneau being awarded.

The Margaret Frans Brady Art Scholarship Fund provided a total of $7,000 to students who are interested in pursuing their passion in the arts and is open to students from northern Southeast Alaska. Brady’s Skagway family members established this scholarship in 2013.

Recipients of this award were: Brittany King, a Juneau-Douglas High School creative senior who has an interest in several mediums including drawing, ceramics, painting, sculpture and graphic design; James Cheng, Juneau-Douglas High School senior who excels at the cello and has shared his skills with many in the community and younger students; Katrina Buchanan, a talented artist and senior at JDHS, where she was chairperson of the Art Club; Anouk Otsea, a senior who excels at both ballet and modern dance and is pursuing a fine arts degree; Kyle Farley-Robinson, a gifted freshman pianist who has played with the Juneau Symphony; Marissa Truitt, a 13-year veteran of Juneau Dance Theatre, where she has preformed in the Nutcracker among other performances; Misha Culver, a sophomore at Marymount Manhattan College in New York City who is continuing her ballet and modern dance training; Robert Newman, an accomplished Juneau musician, finishing his freshman year pursuing a bachelor of fine arts in musical theatre at the Boston Conservatory.

The Anna and Simon Kirk Memorial Scholarships awarded $1,500 to two seniors at JDHS. The estate of Michael Kirk, a long-time math teacher at JDHS, established the Anna and Simon Kirk Memorial Scholarship in 2013. This scholarship is intended to assist a senior girl and boy in pursuing a career through training programs or university studies. This scholarship can be renewed for three additional years.

Aakash Bathija, a graduating high school senior, was inspired by his biology class to pursue a degree in nursing. He will attend the University of Alaska Anchorage in the fall.

Jennifer Gomez, a graduating high school senior, will be the first person in her family to go to college. She will attend the University of Alaska Southeast and would like to become a nurse.

Opinion: Everyone wants to be Jimmy
