Learn how to be an advocate for survivors of abuse, rape at AWARE series

AWARE (Aiding Women in Abuse and Rape Emergencies) is offering advocacy training for community members starting this month.

The two-part training series teaches the public ways they can be part of the solution and how to support survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. It’s also for those who want an to increase their own understanding of domestic violence and sex assault.

It is open to anyone in the community, and is free.

The first series, titled “Learning the Systematic Roots of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault” takes place at the Mendenhall Valley Public Library, 3025 Dimond Park Loop. Topics include sexual assault and rape culture, boundaries, cultural humility and oppression, prevention, trauma, substance abuse, brain effects, trauma and children, advocacy 101 and a community panel.

The dates and times are as follows: Monday, Sept. 11 5 -8 p.m.; Thursday, Sept. 14 5-8 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 16 10:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.; Sunday, Sept. 17 12:30-4:30 p.m.; and Wednesday, Sept. 20 5-8 p.m.

The second series, titled “What AWARE Does and How to Be an Advocate,” takes place at the AWARE administrative offices. It includes a facility tour, talks on protection orders and legal matters, HEART & SART, and mandatory reporting.

Here are the dates and times: Saturday, Sept. 23 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; Sunday, Sept. 24 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; Monday, Sept. 25 5-8:30 p.m.; Thursday, Sept. 28 5-8:30 p.m.
