Eleven-year-old Micah Mende was awarded the rank of Shodan or first-degree black belt at the Regional Alaska Karate Camp in Birchwood following examinations with Sensei James Field, a eighth-degree black belt for the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF). Juneau Shotokan Karate is a member of the ISKF and has students from adults youth seven years old and above. Juneau Shotokan Karate has been part of the Juneau community since 1983.
