Deadline reminders for February and March

 

Feb. 17: SHI Juried Art Show applications due

Sealaska Heritage Institute is accepting applications from artists who want to compete in its eighth biennial Juried Art Show and Competition, which will expand to include new divisions and a youth show. The deadline to apply is Feb. 17. The deadline to apply for the youth show is April 15.

The Juried Art Show and Competition is held during Celebration, SHI’s biennial festival which is scheduled June 8-11. SHI will unveil the pieces accepted for exhibit on June 8, and the show will run for two months at the Walter Soboleff Building. SHI will open the youth show on June 3 at the Juneau Arts and Culture Center, and winners will be announced on June 8 during the awards ceremony for the Juried Art Show and Competition at the Walter Soboleff Building.

 

Feb. 26: Folk Fest applications due

Applications for the 2016 Alaska Folk Festival, the 42nd annual, are due by Friday, Feb. 26 at 5 pm.

Performers can apply directly through the Folk Festival’s website at www.akfolkfest.org, or download an application as a pdf from the website and mail it to the AFF at PO Box 21748, Juneau, AK, 99802-1748. Those without computer access can contact the AFF by phone at 463-3316 to request a paper application in the mail.

Applications will be reviewed the week after the deadline, and a draft schedule will be mailed out by March 4. This schedule will be performers’ confirmation of a spot in the festival.

March 1: Rasmuson Individual Artist Award applications due

The application period for the Rasmuson Foundation’s Individual Artist Awards is currently open through March 1.

The March 1 deadline applies to Rasmuson’s three award programs for individual artists living and working in Alaska: project awards (typically 25 are given), fellowships (10), and one Distinguished Artist Award.

March 10: Anchorage Museum’s solo artist exhibition applications due

The Anchorage Museum invites Alaska artists to submit images of their work for review by a selection committee by March 10. The solo artist exhibition program highlights new bodies of work by individual Alaska artists. The museum typically receives more than 100 applicants for just a handful of available slots. Solo artist exhibitions are open to Alaska artists only.

March 15: Alaska student submissions for naming two state ferries due

From now until March 15, students in grades 6-12 are invited to name two new Alaska state ferries, and submit an essay explaining the choice. According to statute, each ferry must be christened after one of Alaska’s 745 named glaciers. The two winning essays will be displayed on the respective ferries. Two winners will be chosen—one from the 6th-8th grade group, another from the 9th-12th grade group. The two students with winning essays will receive an award certificate in their classroom, presented by Governor Walker, Lt. Governor Mallott, or Commissioner Marc Luiken.
