Scammers are pretending to be GCI

When in doubt, GCI says hang up

General Communications Inc., has received reports of a scam targeting the Juneau area.

Scammers are posing as GCI, telling customers their accounts are delinquent and threatening to disconnect their service unless payment is provided over the phone, GCI spokesperson Josh Edge said Monday.

“It’s kind of that time of the year where there’s any number of email or phone scams going on,” Edge said.

While he said it’s difficult to tell how many have been targeted by the scam, but multiple people called in to report it.

Edge said if anyone receives a call from an entity claiming to be GCI and asking for information, and the call is in any way suspicious, the call recipient should decline to provide information over the phone.

“We really encourage them to hang up and get in touch with us directly,” Edge said.

That can be done by going to a GCI store in person or calling 1-800-800-4800.

“They can feel a little more comfortable about knowing who they’re talking to,” Edge said.
