Man arrested for writing stolen checks

Fred Meyer employees catch alleged thief

Nearly a month ago, a Juneau woman reported that her checkbook had been stolen from her home. Thanks to employees at Fred Meyer, that checkbook and the man who allegedly stole it were found this week.

On Oct. 12, a 74-year-old woman reported to the Juneau Police Department that her checkbook had been stolen from her home on Postal Way, according to a JPD press release. The woman told police that at least three checks, totaling more than $2,500, had been written at businesses across town.

About 3:15 p.m. Monday, employees at Fred Meyer called JPD to say a man was at their customer service desk trying to cash a stolen check, according to the release. Police arrived and found the suspect, 25-year-old Juneau man John Alan Langreder, at a nearby bus stop.

Officers found Langreder had two stolen checks on him, the release states. One check had been written to Fred Meyer for $200 and the other was written to another person for $846, according to the release. Langreder also had two $50 arrest warrants for failing to appear in court for unrelated charges, police say. Fred Meyer employees told police that Langreder had previously been issued a criminal trespass letter from the store.

Langreder was arrested for two counts of second-degree forgery, two counts of second-degree theft, criminal trespass, fraudulent use of an access device and violating conditions of release. He was taken to Lemon Creek Correctional Center and held without bail.
