Traditional holiday cream tea set for Dec. 9

Downtown Juneau’s Episcopal Church is continuing its tradition of British-style cream teas.

This year’s tea will be Saturday, Dec. 9, at McPhetres Hall, Church of the Holy Trinity, 325 Gold Street. Seatings are at 2 and 4 p.m.

“It’s a great opportunity to take a break from the busy holiday season and visit with friends,” said Maggie Schoenfeld, a baker and co-organizer of the event. “We’ll have fresh scones with cream and jam, fancy sandwiches, fruit, desserts, and, of course, tea.”

Tickets are $20 each or $100 for a six-person table. They’re on sale at the church and its website, trinityjuneau.org.

Juneau pianist Tom Locher will play at both servings. He brings a wealth of tunes he learned providing music for his grandmother’s tea parties.

The tea is a come-as-you-are event.

“Some people dress up in fancy hats, British-style. We hope to see the Juneau SteamPunks, who dress in Victorian garb and more,” said co-organizer and baker Betsy Longenbaugh. “But some people come in jeans or whatever else is comfortable.”

The tea is a fundraiser for the church’s operations and outreach programs.

Church of the Holy Trinity plans a full schedule of pre-holiday and Christmas services. Details will be posted at trinityjuneau.org.
