Movie, mining on the mind at Tlingit & Haida event

Tonight is all about movies and mining at Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall.

The Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska is holding a movie night, running from 5:30-7:30 p.m., as part of the organization’s Native American Heritage Month Celebration. The topic this year is “Our Sacred Waters,” and CCTHITA will show the documentary “Awake, A Dream from Standing Rock,” about the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s resistance of the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota.

The event will close with CCTHITA President Richard Peterson speaking about the organization’s activities in relation to transboundary mines, including signing a petition to ask Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross to investigate transboundary mines in British Columbia. CCTHITA’s Native Lands &Resources Department will also give an update on its baseline water quality testing studies in the Stikine, Unuk, Taku and Alsek rivers.

Admission is free, and snacks and refreshments will be provided.
