Player of the Week: Jahrease Mays

He’s a three-time state placer.

Jahrease Mays is the Juneau Empire’s player of the week.

Mays, a senior at Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaat.at Kalé, placed second last weekend in the state wrestling meet’s 125-pound weight class. Mays won three of four matches, defeating Wasilla, Ketchikan and Lathrop competitors in the first three rounds. The senior previously placed at the state tournament in 2016 (106 pounds, fourth) and 2017 (113 pounds, sixth).

“Getting to the finals, there’s no guarantee (of winning), there’s tough wrestlers,” Mays said. “I was just happy to get there but wish I finished on top.”
