Three days of discussions about Juneau’s development during the next 20 years and its relationship with the cruise industry are scheduled by city leaders starting Tuesday.
Four Community Listening Sessions about an update to Juneau’s 20-year Comprehensive Plan are scheduled at various locations Tuesday and Wednesday. The Juneau Assembly is also scheduled to meet with cruise line representatives in a public meeting Thursday at City Hall. Cruise Lines International Association Alaska.
The listening sessions are intended to be open houses where residents can discuss possible revisions to the Comprehensive Plan at the beginning of the process, according to an announcement by the City and Borough of Juneau’s Community Development Department. The last revision to the plan was in 2013.
”The Comprehensive Plan is a big-picture guide that helps shape Juneau — from the types of housing available to the places you shop, work, and spend time with family and friends,” the announcement states. “It influences decisions about parks, schools, roads, and public transportation. The plan also helps protect our natural environment and support the local economy.”
Revising the plan is expected to be a three-year process, according to the Community Development Department website.
Tuesday’s sessions are from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Egan Room at Centennial Hall, and 5-7 p.m. in the Thunder Mountain Middle School commons. Wednesday’s sessions are from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. at the Mendenhall Valley Library and 6–8 p.m. at the Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé commons.
The Assembly Committee of the Whole meeting at noon Thursday with Cruise Lines International Association Alaska and major cruise line representatives will be a discussion between those participants, but public testimony will not be taken, according to CBJ’s website. However, the site notes people can comment on points raised during the discussion by email at Borough.Assembly@juneau.gov.
“The goal of this worksession is to open a dialogue and Q&A between the Assembly and representatives from the major cruise lines as the 2025 cruise season begins,” the website notes.
CBJ and cruise officials have entered into voluntary agreements in recent years that include a five-ship daily limit that took effect last year and a daily passenger cap scheduled to go into effect next year.
