Becker to seek third Assembly term

Juneau Assemblywoman Mary Becker announced Monday she will seek a third term, which coincides with the start of the filing period for municipal races Friday.

Becker, who was first elected in 2010, served as mayor when Greg Fisk died of natural causes Nov. 30, 2015. Before then she had held the title of deputy mayor on the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly.

“After much consideration, I’ve decided to continue to offer my experience and willingness to serve,” she said in a statement delivered to the Empire’s office Monday morning. “I am proud of my record of work on the Juneau Assembly and hope the people of Juneau will return me to the office to continue serving them.”

Becker holds a District 1 seat representing the downtown area. She is a retired Juneau School District teacher of 30 years and served on the Juneau Board of Education for nine years prior to being elected to the Assembly.

She is married to commercial fisherman Jim Becker and has lived in Juneau for 50 years.
