Assembly moves to extend quarantine

The City and Borough of Juneau Assembly asked the municipal attorney Thursday night to draft a resolution extending the required 14-day self-quarantine for out-of-state travelers.

Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s Health Mandate 10, which orders anyone traveling to Alaska from out of state would have to self quarantine for 14-days, is set to expire June 2. But as the economy opens up, the quarantine is the next big hurdle in the way commercial activity. In an email Tuesday, Dunleavy spokesperson Jeff Turner said the governor had not yet made a decision about extending the mandate, but the Assembly decided to move ahead as if the order were being lifted.

Assembly members said an extension would allow the city to draft its own regulations concerning travelers.

The resolution will be drafted over the weekend and presented to the Assembly Committee of the Whole at their meeting Monday night, Mayor Beth Weldon said.
