An evacuation advisory for the Behrends slide path on Mount Juneau remains in effect. All other evacuation advisories have been lifted and Thane Road is open, though the avalanche hazard is still high, according to the City and Borough of Juneau.

Centennial Hall is available as an emergency shelter. The most recent emergency notice was issued Sunday night as rain and high temperatures around 40 degrees Fahrenheit continue.

A Sunday evening CBJ avalanche hazard update stated that there is a “large undisturbed pocket of snow” on the Behrends Avenue avalanche path.

“This winter’s snowpack and weather patterns are unusual for this area,” Bressette said. “While some monitored paths outside of Behrends show reduced hazard, the Behrends slide path continues to present significant risk.”

Residents can monitor their risk by entering their address into the CBJ avalanche hazard map.

Numerous small avalanches occurred over the weekend. Snow released on Behrends Avenue, White Pass and the Chop Gulley area leading toward Flume and Basin roads.

Mendenhall River Community School remains closed Monday, but all other Juneau schools are open on regular schedules, Juneau School District announced Sunday evening. All schools have been cleared for occupancy after evaluations by engineers over the weekend.

Due to continued avalanche risk, there will be no school bus service on Thane Road or on Glacier Avenue/Glacier Highway between Highland Drive and Bartlett Regional Hospital.

MRCS’s roof has been cleared of snow, but the ground around the school still needs clearing, JSD said. MRCS students are set to transition to remote learning Tuesday.

Students were evacuated from MRCS on Thursday amid concerns over damaging snow load on the roof. All students and staff safely relocated to Thunder Mountain MIddle School.
