City and Borough of Juneau has issued an avalanche advisory for areas above Behrends Avenue and Thane Road, warning residents that the risk is high and conditions could change quickly.
The initial advisory was issued at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday afternooon, and was reaffirmed at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
The advisory alert is not an evacuation notice. But officials urge Thane residents to stay informed and prepared.
“Conditions can change rapidly and with little warning,” the alert said.
Thane Road will be closed at the avalanche gates beginning at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 30, according to the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities. The closure will be re-evaluated at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 31.
CBJ has recommended several preparedness steps for Thane residents: Have a go-bag ready, keep phones charged with emergency alerts enabled and be prepared to evacuate quickly if conditions escalate.
Residents are also encouraged to limit travel in avalanche-prone areas and monitor official updates from the city.
High avalanche danger is likely to remain over the next several days, ADOTF&P said. If an avalanche reaches the roadway, crews may not be able to safely clear debris until further risk falls.
DOT&PF warned that residents of Thane should be prepared for extended road closures. Officials said they will continue monitoring conditions and provide updates as needed.
