The Juneau School District recently held its annual district spelling bee. Nineteen students representing Juneau’s elementary and middle schools were part of the district competition on Feb.22 at the Marie Drake gym. The competition was fierce for these talented spellers who faced challenges to spell words like peevish, embossed, exhilaration and crevices. Those who held on until almost the end included Lincoln Severance, Brook Taintor, Welton Zemlicka and Matthew Schwarting. At the end of the seventh round, Schwarting, a Montessori Borealis Public School seventh grader, spelled “maneuverable” to win the competition.
