VIDEO: Watch this ‘beautifully grotesque’ salmon heart beat

This is too weird not to share.

Juneau Empire photographer Michael Penn was down at the dock across from the office, photographing anglers fishing for an upcoming article in Sunday’s paper.

He was photographing Alexander Masters as he cleaned his catch when all of a sudden Masters asked: “Have you ever seen this before?”

Masters pulled the king salmon’s heart out from its body and placed it on the fish station. The heart — the size of a cherry, and just as pink — kept beating.

It was a surreal sight, and a bit nauseating, Penn said, to see the asomatous organ, as Masters kept cleaning the fish.

“I was shocked,” Penn said, “but I still recorded.”

Penn described the scene as “beautifully grotesque.”

See for yourself.
