The Juneau Police Department added to its ranks earlier this month by swearing in two new officers.

Dakota Davies and Rosaline (Rosie) Ostman took their oaths during a ceremony Oct. 5 at the JPD station, according to JPD’s Facebook page.

Both officers will begin within the next month in the department’s field training program, Lt. Krag Campbell said. In this program, they’ll work alongside an officer and get real-world experience. In February, both of them will go to the Alaska Department of Public Safety Training Academy in Sitka, Campbell said.

Ostman, 38, entered North Carolina’s Basic Law Enforcement Training program in 2014, according to JPD. With that prior experience, Campbell explained, Ostman will go through a two-week program in February compared to the six-month program Davies has to go through. Davies, 26, has no prior experience as a police officer and will go through the full training program, Campbell said.

The department is still nine officers short of having a full staff, Campbell said. In this year’s City and Borough of Juneau budget, the Assembly included funding for two more police officers. Campbell said the department is trying to fill those positions, but they’re currently vacant.

Ostman, who spent the past three and a half years with the police department in Burlington, North Carolina, lived in Juneau from 2004-2009. According to JPD’s statement about the new officers, Ostman said Juneau is her favorite place to live.

She’s lived all over the country, as she’s originally from Texas and has lived in Virginia and Pennsylvania in addition to Juneau and Burlington.

Davies has served in the Montana National Guard for the past six years, and is currently in the process of switching to the Army Reserves. In 2016, Davies began working as a rehabilitation technician with the Idaho Department of Juvenile Corrections. Davies is originally from Vancouver, Washington and grew up in Oregon. He arrived in Juneau earlier this month just before his swearing-in ceremony.
