After 35 years in Juneau, fiber artist and retired teacher Barb Mitchell is moving to Washington state. Many of her pieces will be on sale and she will have a new collection of cowl scarves for summer. She hopes “all the families and friends who have enriched her 35 years here will drop by so she can thank them and say goodbye,” according to an email from the gallery.

Elsie Coppens, the 11-year-old founder and CEO of Mountain Goat Notes, is here to help, with custom letter-writing sure to delight any recipient. On First Friday this latter-day Cyrano de Bergerac will be working her pen for free, with some inspirational backup on baritone ukulele by Julie Coppens, a.k.a. Elsie’s mom. Bring your address book and get signed, sealed, and delivered — or just sing along.

As part of the High Tide Featured Artists Series, tattoo artist Devon Blue will show some of his original artwork at the Taqueria. Limited edition merchandise including apparel, patches, stickers, and prints will be for sale.
There will also be some live music from Devon’s band, “Slim Grim & The Reaper Bros,” at the event. After the gallery walk Slim Grim & The Reaper Bros. will be having a EP release party at the Rendezvous, where they will play an hour-long set.
This will be a big weekend for Devon, especially since shortly after the show this life-long Juneauite will be moving down south to pursue his career as a Tattoo Artist. He currently works at High Tide Tattoo.

The main focus is on the latest book: “Ed Ricketts from Cannery Row to Sitka, Alaska.” Ricketts was a scientist, an author, and the inspiration for the character of “Doc” in John Steinbeck’s “Cannery Row.”

Teri Jo’s ideas come from the wildlife she sees in her travels and the scenery that surrounds them. Once the idea is formed, she thinks in terms of flat shapes, line, white spaces, repetition, and color in putting the piece into final form. There is a crispness and clarity to her work.
