JDHS Theatre opens ‘Seven Brides for Seven Brothers’

Lead bride, Millie, as played by Lydia Smith, sings with her new husband Adam's six brothers. In this memorable dance scene, Millie teaches the brothers how to court a lady. The brothers, from left to right, are Christ Talley, Brandon Hard, Marcellin Niset, Ian Scholl, Dylan Rice, and Josh Rivers.

Juneau-Douglas High School’s Theatre Department on Jan. 29 opens its production of the rambunctious musical “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.”

“Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,” adapted from a 1954 movie of the same name, tells the story of Millie, a young bride living in the 1850’s Oregon wilderness, and her plan to civilize and marry off her six rowdy brothers-in-law to ensure the success of her own marriage. Packed with rambunctious dance numbers and vaudeville style action sequences, ‘Seven Brides for Seven Brothers’ is all boisterous fun and romance that harkens back to the glory days of the movie musical.

The play shows at the JDHS auditorium for the next two weekends. It begins Friday, Jan 29 at 7 p.m. and continues Saturday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; Thursday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m.; Friday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 general admission, $15 for senior citizens, and $10 for students. Add $2 if you buy at the door. Tickets are pre-sold at Hearthside Books, JAHC.org and by cast members.

Lydia Smith plays lead bride Millie and Jared Vance plays lead brother Adam. Of the brothers, Gideon is played by Marcellin Niset, Benjamin by Brandon Hard. Caleb by Dylan Rice, Daniel by Ian Scholl, Ephraim by Josh Rivers, and Frank by Chris Talley. Of the brides, Alice is played by Mirriam Meredith, Dorcas by Kamy Hamrick, Ruth by Bethany Bibb, Liza by Suzanne Nierra, Martha by Molly York, and Sarah by Keely Ewing.
