Southeast basketball, cheer, dance and pep band team members were honored by the Region V 2A/3A/4A Basketball Tournament staff on Saturday night at the B.J. McGillis Gymnasium at Mt. Edgecumbe High School.
Juneau-Douglas and Thunder Mountain High School students were recipients of dozens of individual accolades, appearing on both the all-conference and all-academic teams. The tournament, which took place Tuesday through Saturday, featured teams from Juneau, Ketchikan, Sitka, Petersburg, Haines, Wrangell, Craig and Metlakatla. About half of the participating teams earned state championship berths.
Seniors Alyxn Bohulano, Caitlin Pusich and Krishant Samtani, all of JDHS, were all-academic and all-conference selections. Pusich had 29 points in the tournament opener on Wednesday and Samtani scored a career-high 23 points in his team’s Thursday semifinal.
Pusich also won the tournament’s free-throw shooting contest, shooting 23 of 25 from the charity stripe. Ketchikan senior ER Caparas made 36 free throws in a row to run away with the boys free-throw contest. JDHS junior Sadie Tuckwood won the 3-point shooting contest by making 14 of 25.
All-academic teams were composed of seniors with a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher. The all-conference selections were voted on by the coaches.
