If you notice a decrease in the water level at Twin Lakes — despite this week’s drizzly weather — it’s because the City and Borough of Juneau’s Parks and Recreation Department and the Alaska Department of Fish & Game are draining the lakes to control milfoil, an invasive aquatic weed.
The lakes are drained annually and filled with salt water, which controls milfoil without using herbicides. Left unchecked, milfoil can cause serious ecological damage to the lakes’ ecosystems, and interferes with recreational swimming and fishing.
The lakes should be refilled by mid-April. The gangway connecting the fishing float with shore will be removed for the duration of the project.
