Grand jury issues indictments for vehicular assault, animal cruelty

A man told police last month while walking along a sidewalk that he saw a truck heading “straight towards him.” He was able to get away, but not before it struck him.

A Juneau grand jury indicted Christopher Manuel Diaz, 25, on Wednesday for an alleged felony assault that occurred on July 1. According to an information document filed by Juneau District Attorney James Scott, Diaz was driving a black Chevy pickup on Calhoun Avenue the day of the assault. Diaz told officers he swerved off the road to avoid hitting a pedestrian. The truck he was driving crashed into a nearby yard and officers found plants hanging from Diaz’s passenger side mirror.

Diaz made his first appeared in Juneau District Court July 7, and an arraignment in Juneau Superior Court will follow soon.

Other indictments

A Juneau grand jury also issued four other indictments on Wednesday. Indictments are only formal accusations of illegal activity, but they are not evidence of guilt. According to copies of the indictments, they are as follows:

• Adam J. Larsen, 31, was indicted for felony cruelty to an animal and felony criminal mischief, both which are class C felonies. The charges stem from a May 14 incident. No other information from prosecutors, Animal Control or police was available about the case.

• Jeffrey S. Miller, 37, and Jennifer G. Brown, 39, are listed as co-defendants in an indictment for drug misconduct involving heroin. Miller faces three class C felony charges of misconduct involving a controlled substance for incidents on May 9, 11 and 24. Following the indictment, the court issued a $5,000 bench warrant for Miller’s arrest.

Brown faces four counts for class C felony misconduct involving a controlled substance for incidents on May 9, 11, 24 and 27.

• Angela M. Brown, 33, and Richard G. Baker, 25, are listed as co-defendants in an indictment for importing contraband at Lemon Creek Correctional Center. They both face a single class C felony for promoting contraband on March 16. The court issued $5,000 bench warrants for Brown’s and Baker’s arrest.

• Brett E. King, 54, was indicted for felony tampering with physical evidence on June 13 in Juneau.
