The City and Borough of Juneau is warning the avalanche hazard on the Behrends path is expected to peak late Tuesday and into Wednesday morning.
The likelihood of large avalanches are expected to significantly increase during that time due to heavy rain, high winds and warming temperatures at high elevations, according to an avalanche evacuation advisory from CBJ Tuesday, Jan. 13.
“CBJ realizes that this extended evacuation advisory is extremely inconvenient and that residents are likely feeling fatigued. If you live in the Behrends pathway and have not evacuated or have returned to your home, please evacuate now,” Tuesday’s update states.
While the evacuation advisory remains in effect for the Behrends slide path, the advisory has been lifted for all other known slide paths, but the avalanche risk remains elevated.
CBJ is asking people to limit travel in avalanche-exposed areas.
Emergency shelter is available at Centennial Hall and emergency response crews are ready to respond in the event of an avalanche.
Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities closed Thane Road at the avalanche gates at noon on Tuesday due to the high hazard on the roadway.
CBJ is actively monitoring and assessing the avalanche risk for all other known slide paths.
