Salmon derby season set to kick off

Salmon derby season kicks off in less than two weeks, beginning with the Craig Klawock Salmon Derby.

Here’s a list of other derbies this spring and summer in Southeast. Check with your local derby organizers for the most up-to-date information.

• Golden North Salmon Derby

Aug. 16-18

The Golden North Salmon Derby is a Juneau fishing event where people compete for prizes by catching the “weightiest” fish. The derby began in 1947 and is sponsored by the Territorial Sportsmen, which provides scholarships for graduating high school seniors as well as for graduate study and vocational training.

• Craig Klawock Salmon Derby

May 15-June 30

July 1-Aug. 15

Derby will be held Aug. 24.

Run by the city of Craig, one $35 ticket in this competition gets you into both derbies. Proceeds support salmon enhancement on Prince of Wales Island.

• Ketchikan CHARR Salmon Derby

Weekend 1: Aug. 17-18

Weekend 2: Aug. 24-25

Weekend 3: Aug. 31-Sept. 2

Sponsored by CHARR (Alaska Cabaret, Hotel, Restaurant and Retailers Association), this derby helps fund educational programs and is spread over three weekends.

• Sitka Sportsmans Annual Salmon Derby
