With a midnight start on July 4, the fireworks show over Gastineau Channel is a much-anticipated tradition in the capital city with locals gathering across the water that seperates Juneau and Douglas Island. (Clarise Larson / Juneau Empire)

As the clock struck midnight, Juneau welcomed the Fourth of July with sounds much louder than a chiming clock.

The City and Borough Juneau’s annual fireworks show lit up the recently darkened sky over the Gastineau Channel with a thunderous display that lasted over 20 minutes.
