Haunting yields more than 1,500 pounds of food

Juneau man Dan Earls probably has your trick-or-treating haul beat.

Local food pantries will have an extra 1,563 pounds of food on hand this month, thanks to his Halloween fun.

In October, Earls decorated his yard and transformed his garage into a haunting attraction celebrating the spooky season.

He invited the public to walk through the display and asked for food donations instead of an admission fee.

[Haunting for canned goods]

According to a message from Earls, his efforts—and the generosity of those who visited the attraction— generated 1,563 pounds of nonperishable items and canned goods — an amount just shy of his 1,800-pound goal.

“1,563 pounds! Big thanks to this awesome Juneau, valley, Douglas community I live in. Thanks for helping and giving,” Earls said in a text.

A similar message appeared on social media.

“We are immensely grateful for the turn out this Halloween and hope that everyone who donated to the cause can find the time to donate to the Juneau food bank over this coming holiday season,” reads a post from Geneva Earls on the Juneau Community Collective on Facebook.
