CCFR conducts water rescue training near airport

Capital City Fire/Rescue on Monday afternoon carried out water rescue training for personnel at the floatplane pond at Juneau International Airport.

The training, which followed a major training event on Saturday, is part of CCFR’s annual training cycle, keeping personnel ready for rescues in any of Juneau’s varied environs, said assistant fire chief Ed Quinto in a phone interview.

Six personnel underwent the training, carried out in-house by the water rescue team. Training for water rescues helps ready CCFR personnel for the possibility of rescuing a struggling victim, which can rapidly put rescuers into a dangerous situation if not approached effectively, Quinto said.

CCFR and Coast Guard personnel recently cooperated for a similar training, learning about swiftwater rescues in the brisk waters of the Mendenhall River.
