Scouting for Food helps stock local food pantries

Juneau residents donated more than 9,000 pounds of food to local food pantries in April as part of the annual Scouting for Food event hosted by local Scouts BSA troops.

The food drive was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic but was back in force this spring.

“The event was a fantastic success,” said Chris Schapp, manager of the Southeast Alaska Food Bank, in an email to Scout leaders that was shared with the Empire.

Scouts distributed collection bags and flyers about the program throughout the week and circled back Saturday morning to collect canned goods and non-perishable donations and deliver them to the food bank.

The Southeast Alaska Food Bank received 8,986 pounds, and an additional 562 pounds was donated to the food bank at Resurrection Lutheran Church.
