State reports 2nd inmate death related to COVID-19

A second inmate of the Alaska Department of Corrections has died on Monday from complications related to the coronavirus, the department announced.

The offender, a 77-year-old, had been in custody at Goose Creek Correctional Center since 2014, according to DOC spokesperson Sarah Gallagher. They were serving a 22-year sentence for sexual abuse of a minor and violating conditions of release. They had been medevaced to the Mat-Su Regional Medical Center in Palmer on Sunday, Nov. 22. Another Goose Creek inmate died on Nov. 22 from the coronavirus, the first inmate to die in Alaska.

GCCC is currently experiencing a serious outbreak, with more than 265 inmates reported with confirmed cases as of Nov. 23.

The inmate was not named to protect their private health information, Gallagher said.
