Sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean have been unusually warm from the West Coast to as far north as the Gulf of Alaska.
It’s called the blob, and for the last several years, it’s had big implications for ocean species like salmon and cod, whose life cycles can be thrown off by the warm waters. Jim Murphy, a scientist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, will explain what the blob does and what it could mean for Alaska’s fisheries at a meeting of the Downtown Rotary Club at noon on Tuesday at the Baranof Hotel.
