ANCHORAGE — A brown bear that was accidentally shot by a local police officer in Southeast Alaska last month has been killed by National Park Service personnel.

Anchorage television station KTVA reported the bear was killed Saturday, a day after people in the Dyea area near Skagway reported seeing a limping bear. The park service says in a release that it was decided to put the bear down after it was found with a “dead’ hind leg. Officials say the bear could not put any weight on the leg, and it didn’t seem to fear people.

Officials said the bear was later found to have a broken femur and dislocated hip.

The brown bear was accidentally shot July 16 with a real bullet by a Skagway police officer who had been trying to use non-lethal means against the animal at a campground.
