Minimum wage bump scheduled for Jan. 1

Alaskans making minimum wage should check their paychecks after the new year. Alaska’s minimum wage rises to $9.75 per hour, rising from the current minimum wage of $8.75.

Unlike in other states, tips do not count toward the minimum wage — the posted wage is the absolute least that an employee can be paid by an employer.

The minimum wage will be revised Jan. 1 each year after 2016 to account for inflation.

The minimum wage increase was part of a ballot measure approved by Alaska voters in November 2014.

The measure also calls for the state’s minimum wage to remain at least $1 above the federal minimum, should it be raised.
