Underclassmen show off at Capital City Invitational

Oh, to be young again.

The Juneau-Douglas and Thunder Mountain High School cross country teams received fast runs from underclassmen Saturday at the Capital City Invitational.

Two freshmen and two sophomores on the Crimson Bears girls squad finished in the top 10 of the 5-kilometer race at Sandy Beach.

Led by Sadie Tuckwood’s 18 minutes, 58 seconds race, the team finished first with 31 points, in front of Petersburg (48), TMHS (69), Ketchikan (106), Haines (137), Sitka (145) and Wrangell (180).

Tuckwood said she didn’t meet her time goal for the race, but wasn’t overly concerned about it.

“It’s the first race, I have to get used to it again,” she said.

The Falcons girls put three runners — including two freshmen — in top 15.

Freshman Hannah Deer was Tuckwood’s biggest competitor by finishing second with a 20:53. She just beat out JDHS’ Anna Iverson (20:59) and Jasmin Holst (21:45). Junior Sally Thompson and freshman Ellie Knapp placed eighth and 15th respectively for TMHS.

Junior Crimson Bear Arne Ellefson-Carnes was first overall in the boys race (16:57). Three Sitka runners were close on his heels —Joe Pate, Dominic Baciocco and Skyler McIntyre. Pate finished just 11 seconds behind Ellefson-Carnes for second place.

“I really just ran with Joe for most of the race,” Ellefson-Carnes said. “We ran a lot freshman year neck-and-neck, and it was cool to see that again.”

The Wolves’ 36 points put them ahead of all the other boys teams: JDHS (71), Haines (93), Ketchikan (103), Petersburg (142), TMHS (147) and four other teams.

Ellefson-Carnes’ teammate Finn Morley was the first freshman to finish the race, coming in eighth.

“I surprised myself, definitely,” Morley said joyfully. “There was another guy in front of me who wasn’t on our team and we just kept switching back and forth. In the end, he beat me, but still, it was really cool.”

Four places behind Morley, an equally small and spry runner, Tucker Kelly, finished first for the Falcons.

“I was really happy with how my team did, how everyone did, friends got (personal records),” Kelly said. “It’s a great start to the season.”
