Juneau volleyball faces stiff competition on the road

JDHS, TMHS still awaiting crosstown matches.

Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaat.at Kalé (5-1, 2-0 Southeast) placed 13th in the West Anchorage High School Spiketacular Tournament in Anchorage.

The Crimson Bears fell to Wasilla 2-1 (25-23, 14-25, 11-15) and Soldotna 2-0 (25-18, 25-9) in the bracket round, after winning three of eight sets played in pool play. Wasilla advanced all the way to the championship game before losing to South Anchorage.

The Spiketacular started with 18 Alaska teams on Friday afternoon, and wrapped up Saturday night.

Thunder Mountain High School (4-1, 0-0 Southeast) volleyball was also on the road, and took part in the Tacoma-Pierce County Volleyball Officials Invite in Tacoma, Washington, for the fourth year in a row. The Falcons lost to Jefferson High School (Auburn, Washington) 2-1 (25-22, 14-25, 11-15) in the first round of the bracket stage on Saturday night.

Results from pool play were not immediately available, but TMHS coach Julie Herman said most of the sets were very close. The Falcons stayed an hour north of Tacoma in the small town of Kingston with Kingston High volleyball players. The Buccaneers were one of the 15 other teams in the tournament, and snuck in a match with the Falcons on Friday night, winning 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-23). Herman said the Buccaneers program has become a sister school with her program.

The two Juneau schools clash Oct. 4-5, with next Friday’s contest slated for 8 p.m. at TMHS, and and the following day’s contest slated for 7 p.m. at JDHS. JDHS and TMHS play in Petersburg and Ketchikan, respectively, this weekend.
