Letter: We will remember at the ballot box

If we can’t trust Trump or the White House administration what about our Alaskan Representatives? As an Alaskan, I was stunned by the comfort Sen. Sullivan had putting party before the interests of Alaskans — particularly those of hard working teachers.

Sullivan’s office was flooded with the same calls and letters requesting a no vote on DeVos that Murkowski received. I watched the testimony and not only was DeVos unable to answer basic questions about public education (which 91 percent of the children in this country attend), her statements regarding students with disabilities, school safety, college sexual assault policies and school accountability were profoundly inept.

Betsy and Richard DeVos get the gold medal for campaign contributions with just shy of 3 million to the GOP in the 2016 election cycle. The silver medal goes to Muchin for Secretary of Treasury who upped his giving 400% from previous years with a whopping $427,250 dollar contribution in 2016.

Given DeVos’s disqualifying testimony, preference for religious and voucher programs with no evidence of effectiveness, and campaign financial disclosures it surprised me how easily Sullivan was able to ignore the clear conflicts of interest and the thousands of requests from parents, educators, and administrators who want a ‘no’ Vote on DeVos. Instead, he continues to align himself with the interests of the far right GOP and the White House ‘Alt Fact’ Administration. Voters have a long memory. We, the people of Alaska, will remember at the ballot box.
