The University of Alaska Southeast has officially begun recruiting students for its new associate degree in maritime transportation.
The University of Alaska Board of Regents approved the degree in its Juneau meeting last week, and UAS said in a statement Wednesday that students will be able to start the program in the spring 2016 semester.
The program caters to students seeking employment with the Alaska Marine Highway System, tug and barge lines, fishing boats and charter boats.
While UAS had offered a certificate program in marine transportation, the creation of an associate degree program allows eligible students to receive financial aid through the GI Bill.
The program includes two faculty — one in Juneau and one in Ketchikan — but is primarily based in Ketchikan. Many courses are taught online.
