Search And Rescue Body Recovery

On Sunday, Aug. 31, at about 9:30 a.m., Alaska State Troopers were notified of an overdue hiker in the Juneau area. Thomas Casey, 69, of Arizona, was last seen on the morning of Aug. 30 and was reported to be on a hike. No details about where he was going or when he would be back were provided. His phone was pinged, and it returned to a remote spot between Thunder Mountain trail and Nugget Creek trail. Juneau Mountain Rescue and SEADogs were contacted and six crews (three dog teams, six ground searchers) were put in the field to start searches at the trail heads and the location of the ping. At about 5:00 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 1, Juneau Mountain Rescue and SEAdogs located Thomas deceased from injuries obtained from a fall. He was located near the Mendenhall Glacier on the west side off the trail. The updated location for the cell phone was provided by RCC and Apple emergency services. The body is being sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office. Next of kin has been notified.

Rescue Effort

On Tuesday, Alaska Wildlife Troopers received a report at 1:45 p.m. that an adult man had fallen into a stream on the Mendenhall Glacier and was missing after he was pushed by the water into a small vertical opening in the ice. The two people he was traveling with could no longer see him once he fell into the opening. Juneau Mountain Rescue deployed a technical ice rescue team, who subsequently discovered the roughly two-foot-wide hole was filled with rushing water. It was determined to be too dangerous to attempt to locate the missing man, pending any further leads. He was a resident of Italy, and efforts are ongoing to notify his next of kin.

Shoplifting

On Tuesday at 12:17 p.m., on Front Street, a 28-year-old woman reported a shoplift at a local business.
