A fire that destroyed a homeless encampment under the Brotherhood Bridge cast a pall of smoke over rush-hour traffic Friday evening, but no injuries were reported and a search for people staying at the site was unsuccessful, officials said.
“It looked a lot worse than it was,” Dan Jager, assistant chief of operations for Capital City Fire/Rescue said after the fire was knocked down at about 6 p.m.
This is the second summer Juneau has had a “dispersed camping” policy, rather than an officially sanctioned campground for people experiencing homelessness. The Brotherhood Bridge is among many sites throughout town where people have been seen camping regularly.
