City expands free parking hours downtown

For some areas of downtown, free parking is starting a little earlier in the day.

Beginning July 1, free off-street hourly parking will start at 4 p.m. instead of 6 p.m., the City and Borough of Juneau announced Monday. Deputy City Manager Mila Cosgrove said this decision was a logical one.

“Most people who have permit parking in the garages are doing so because they need it for the workday,” Cosgrove said in a release. “Most people’s workday ends between 4 and 5, and as they leave, it makes sense to allow others to park in those spots.”

The change applies to the Shopper’s Lot (corner of Main Street and Egan Drive), Downtown Transportation Center Parking Garage (on Main Street), North Franklin Lot (corner of Second Street and North Franklin Street) and the Marine Parking Garage (Marine Way below the Downtown Public Library).

Between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., parking fees and permits will still be enforced. Parking remains free on weekends. There is no change to on-street parking, which is still limited to two hours until 6 p.m. The change also doesn’t apply to the Docks and Harbors parking spaces in the Taku Lot near Twisted Fish.
