I am beginning to notice that numerous very well-loved Juneau trails and beach access points are falling into disrepute. It appears to me that the distribution of effort is such that some trails are being over-improved while others, primarily point and beach-access trails, are being grossly neglected.
I speak specifically of the following trails: Indian Point, Outer Point, Bishop Point, Cowee Creek and these beach access locations: Fox Farm Trail, Tee Harbor, Lena Loop.
Juneau’s trail system is something I (and many others) have worked on with pride my entire 65-year lifetime. I’m no longer at all convinced that the U.S. Forest Service delegating trail maintenance to Trail Mix is serving our community at all well.
I have no particular interest in mountain bike riding the dismal view-less beach-less Treadwell Ditch ad nauseum, but would dearly love to be able to access the expansive views and lovely scenery and beaches the above-mentioned trails provide. To be blunt: I don’t want to see Juneau turned into “Florida of the North” with chained link fences down to MLLW, gated communities and no ability to walk our beaches. We currently seem to be headed that way.
