Juneau Mountain Rescue assists after hunters become stranded

Three hunters were rescued Monday morning after they were stranded on William Henry Mountain, according to a U.S. Coast Guard release.

The two men and one woman were unharmed when a Coast Guard Air Station Sitka MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew picked them up and took them to Juneau on Monday morning, according to the release. Alaska State Troopers reported to the Coast Guard on Sunday night that there were hunters stranded on the mountain — which is located by William Henry Bay, about 45 miles northwest of Juneau — and that the hunters were not in immediate distress.

Due to the situation, the release states, Coast Guard personnel agreed it was safer to wait until the sun rose Monday to search for the trio. The Jayhawk crew flew to Juneau first to pick up two Juneau Mountain Rescue climbers before going to find the hunters. Petty Officer 2nd Class Kyle Gee said in the release that the JMR members helped the mission go smoothly

“Having the Juneau Mountain Rescue members aboard our helicopter allowed us the ability to lower them to provide assistance if we were unable to safely conduct the hoist,” Gee said in the release. “It truly highlights the extent we and partner agencies go to ensure safety of all no matter what level of distress.”
