Juneau-Douglas High School has been recognized as the overall winner in the Alaska Tsunami Bowl 2026.
The Tsunami Bowl announced the winners Tuesday, March 31, calling the competition “intense, close, and full of strong performances across the board.” It was held March 27 to 29 in Seward.
A Facebook post from the Tsunami Bowl said the teams “demonstrated excellence across both the research project and quiz bowl competition, combining strong scientific understanding, teamwork, and quick thinking under pressure.”
Juneau-Douglas High School’s Team Pacificus placed first overall, followed by Seward High School’s Tropic of Answer in second and Ketchikan High School’s Saber-Toothed Salmon in third.
For the research project awards, Juneau-Douglas High School placed second. Seward High School placed first and Ketchikan High School placed third.
Alaska Sea Grant says a “unique aspect” of the regional competition is the student research project, which in addition to the quiz bowl, teams prepare, submit, and present a research paper on a marine-related topic.
“This interdisciplinary challenge helps students develop skills in scientific writing, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving,” according to the Alaska Sea Grant’s website.
