JLO: What was your first memorable public performance?

JM: My first memorable performance was in elementary school talent show. I sang Stacy Lattisaw, “Let Me Be Your Angel.” I knew then I wanted to be a singer.

JLO: Who are three singers who have influenced you throughout your singing career?

JM: Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin and Patti Labelle.

JLO: Who are some local performers who inspire you?

JM: I’m inspired whenever I hear Sherry Patterson or Salissa Thole sing. Their voices are at different ends of the spectrum and inspire me to stretch my range and try different things.

JLO: What are three songs you absolutely love to sing?

JM: Just three songs? That is really not fair! “Alabaster Box” is a gospel song that centers my soul and gives me comfort on bad days. Anything by Whitney Houston can send me into a tailspin of songs. Lastly, “Part of Your World” from the Little Mermaid is a song I sing to my son when we are being playful.

JLO: What is your favorite local role or performance?

JM: I really enjoyed participating in “Who’s Your Diva” last year and my most recent performance at the Juneau Dance Theater’s spring show. I was very honored that I was given the chance to participate.

JLO: What’s your favorite place to sing (besides the stage)?

JM: I love to go hiking and sing in the woods. I love to just go full blown without worrying about who is around. I can make mistakes, try new techniques and most importantly keep the bears away.

JLO: What’s a famous movie or theatre role you would love the chance to play?

JM: I always wished I had acting abilities so that I could sing in the “Little Shop of Horrors.” Any role would be fine.

JLO: What are some of your other interests besides singing?

JM: I relocated here from the east coast and my family is from New York. When I told them I was moving to Alaska, they thought I was crazy. So as crazy as it may sound, I would love to live off-grid and start a hobby farm. I’ve raised chickens before and want to get back to that and maybe add a goat. I would love to learn how to make cheese and soaps.
