Eviction of Telephone Hill residents has been delayed one month, as the legal process of previous eviction notices were not properly followed.

Mayor Beth Weldon announced the decision at the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly meeting Monday night. Residents now must vacate by Nov. 1.

Municipal Attorney Emily Wright brought the issue to the Assembly in executive session preceding Monday’s public meeting. Alaska Legal Services informed Wright last week that the city did not properly notify at least one resident of the eviction.

Weldon said the city then looked into communication sent by JPR Management, the company in charge of managing the Telephone Hill property. The city said that JPR sent eviction notices via emails and posted notices on the doors of houses on Telephone Hill, but that these notices were not properly, legally documented.

The update comes amid the Assembly’s plan to demolish the houses on Telephone Hill to redevelop the area, building higher density housing.

Over 20 people spoke out against the plan at last week’s Assembly meeting, many criticizing the city for moving forward with eviction and demolition of the houses without a developer in place to complete the construction of new housing.

Weldon said that the city would release new eviction notices to residents on Sept. 30.
