Arrest outside Juneau bar leaves officer with serious injury

A Juneau police officer suffered a broken bone in his face after responding to a report of an assault at a Juneau bar.

Donavin Micheal McCurley, 26, is charged with assault in the 2nd degree, assault in the 4th degree and resisting arrest.

Officers were called to the Alaskan Hotel and Bar for a report of an assult on Aug. 7, according to a document filed in Juneau District Court.

The suspect was located on Front Street and when an officer attempted to place handcuffs on McCurley, he was punched in the face, resulting in a closed fracture of the left maxillary sinus that might require surgery, according to the complaint filed by Officer Paul Overturf.

“McCurley was uncooperative and several officers had to place him in the passenger compartment of a patrol vehicle for transport,” said Overturf’s statement, adding the suspect bit another officer in the left buttocks.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.
