JDHS girls secure back-to-back shutout wins against Ketchikan

In a pair of early season weekend faceoffs, the Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé’s girls soccer team swept the competition with two shut-out victories.

The team bested the visiting Ketchikan High School girls twice, securing a pair of 7-0 wins Friday night and Saturday afternoon in games hosted at Thunder Mountain High School.

Friday night’s first goal came from junior midfielder Cadence Plummer, who was one of the leading scorers of the night, taking home three goals. She was followed by freshman striker Peyton Wheeler who scored twice.

During Saturday’s game, the first goal came early on in the first half from Wheeler, unassisted. The top scorers of the game were junior midfielder/forward Ruby Rivas and sophomore midfielder/forward Milina Mazon who both secured two goals in the game.

The two weekend wins put the team in a 3-0 conference position, a great way to kick off the season for the young team, said JDHS coach Matt Dusenberry.

“In the first week, playing three games is a little bit much for their legs, but it’s nice to be able to say we got three conference wins at this point,” he said.

Dunsenberry said he considers the team to be pretty young this year compared to previous years, with only four players from last year’s state team returning to the field. Despite that, he said he’s excited for the season to come.

“We got a lot of learning to go, and we have to be comfortable with some mistakes,” he said. “Hopefully we can continue to put forth an effort and be where we hope to be by the end of the season.”

Dusenberry said the stand-out players of the weekend were Plummer and sophomore forward Adelyn Buss.

The team will have some time to rest before its next game April 18 against TMHS, followed by a game against Wheat Ridge High School April 22.
