U.S. Sen. Robert J. Dole, R-Kansas, was a man of principle, and a man of the seasons. The world needed him, like they need him now, which is President Joe Biden.

Yes, I am a Democrat, but I don’t believe them all —but most. I started under President Ronald Reagan’s administration and worked for U.S. Sen. Frank Murkowski, R-Alaska, he hired me in the U.S. Senate’s mail room. Plus, I went to the American University in Washington, D.C. At that time, I was one of the very few, if any, Natives that went to a university, and I worked for a U.S. Senator.

While working there, I never felt any prejudice or racial hatred. They were all decent, law-abiding and honest people. What I did was work in the U.S. Senate mail room, and every two weeks, I delivered their mail and checks to Vice President George H.W. Bush. Sens. Dole, Sarbanes, Grassley, Kennedy and others worked there almost three years after I worked there for a while and asked Sen. Dole and Kennedy: “Hey, Senator, you do not need your check. Can I have it?”

Dole and Kennedy would joke back “Yeah, Credo, go ahead, take them all.”

They didn’t care what your political background was because we all worked for the common good, the American people. Not like now, they demonize each other, and it’s shameful, very shameful.

God and life has been good to me, and I am an ordained minister. Jesus Christ saved a sorry, low-life miserable soul like me. I want to give back, all I need is a church to preach.

Arsenio “Pastor” Credo is an ordained minister. He resides in Juneau. Columns, My Turns and Letters to the Editor represent the view of the author, not the view of the Juneau Empire. Have something to say? Here’s how to submit a My Turn or letter.
