Toy Run organizer Brillo accepts donations at the Douglas Firehall Sunday, August 21. It was the 22nd year for the annual Bob Valliant Toy Run. Douglas Volunteer Firefighters, Capital City Fire and Rescue, the Triangle Club and Louie's Bar supported the run. The Panhandlers Motorcycle Club rounded up hundreds of soft toys.

Welder Craig Starmer, left, passes his cellphone to sculptor R.T. "Skip" Wallen for a quick photo as Starmer welds the fins on the towering sculpture of a humpback whale that will soon be mounted on Juneau's waterfront. Starmer was joined by crane operator Buck Churchill and assistant Bart Latta for welding work that started Thursday and continued at 7 a.m. Friday.
Bruce Simonson used 900 images of historical posters and memorabilia from over 50 arts organizations in Juneau to decorate the six-foot whale's tail. For construction of the sculpture, Simonson was assisted by Harry and Thomas James, Roald Simonson, and Gary Vetesy.  For the virtual rendering of the sculpture, he received help from Kurt Smith (for photography of the sculpture and construction of the mount), and from Finn Sinclair (for computer modeling and 3D rendering).
