Juneau-Douglas High School junior Mia Ruffin did everything she could to put the Crimson Bears on the brink of a team state championship Saturday except polish swim goggles and wash towels.

Ruffin won the girl’s 200 yard IM and girl’s 100 yard breaststroke at the ASAA/First National Bank State Swimming and Diving Championships in Anchorage’s Bartlett High School pool. She also swam the breaststroke on the Crimson Bears’ state championship 200 yard medley relay win.

“I’m very proud of the team this year on how well we did at state,” Ruffin said. “We all worked extremely hard, and the dedication really paid off. I cannot stress how thankful I am for being part of such a talented swim team, as well as, having very supportive and fantastic coaches. I couldn’t have achieved what I did without them.”

Ruffin’s times were 2:09.23 in the IM and 1:06.60 in the breaststroke.

“Mia had the meet of her life,” JDHS coach Seth Cayce said. “She dropped three seconds in her 200 IM and broke the school record. She is the first girl in almost 10 years to win both her individual races for JDHS.”

Ruffin was also one of four double state championship winners. Chugiak’s Emmie Jennings won the girl’s 50 free (23.42) and 100 free (51.01); Service’s Nathaniel Adams won the boy’s 50 free (21.02) and 100 free (46.56); and Kodiak’s Talon Lindquist won the boy’s 200 free (1:40.60) and 100 fly (50.05). Lindquist won the boy’s 200 IM and the 100 back state titles last season as a freshman.

The JDHS medley relay team of Ruffin, Eliza Chappell, Gabi Kito and Andyn Mulgrew-Truitt powered to a 1:49.60 to win the event for the second time in a row. They finished one second faster than Chugiak.

Sitka’s Will Pate won the boy’s 500 yard freestyle and teammate Jessica Davis the girls 100 backstroke to give Southeast their only other titles.

Thunder Mountain freshman Bergen Davis set the tone for future swim championships by bringing home two medals. Davis finished second in the boy’s 200 IM in 1:57.24 and third in the 100 breast with a 59.09.

“I think the team swam really well this weekend at state,” Davis said via text. “I am also more than happy with taking away two medals. This year has gotten me really excited for our team next year. Hopefully we’ll get a few more kids to qualify for state individually and on relays. I am really happy with how this year turned out.”

JDHS’ Eliza Chappell medaled with a third in the girl’s 100 back with 1:00.17.

The Falcons Spencer Holt placed fourth in the boy’s 100 fly with 52.47 and eighth in the 200 free in 1:49.66.

“It was a blast to come up to Anchorage for state,” Holt said. “I loved competing against so many great athletes I can’t wait for next swim season. Most of all I want to thank my coaches and team for all their support this year.”

JDHS’ Kito was fifth in the girl’s 200 free in 1:59.65 and fifth in the 100 fly with 1:00.97. Teammate Riley Walsh was eighth in the girl’s 100 free with 56.35, and Aidan Seid was eighth in the boy’s 200 IM with 2:05.45.

“The girls really stepped their game up in finals today,” JDHS swim coach Cayce said. “Gabi’s two fifth-place finishes and Eliza’s third-place finish really helped out. Our relays came up huge too. We couldn’t have finished where we did without any of the girls. It was a true team effort.

“I am extremely proud that I was able to coach this group of kids. I couldn’t have asked for a better team.

State Records were set by the Dimond Boys 200 Medley Relay (1:36.29) and by Eagle River girls diver Jami Stone (482.75 points).

Outstanding Female Athlete of the state meet was Chugiak’s Jennings and Outstanding Male Athlete was Kodiak’s Lindquist.
